Netherlands - Malta collaboration project

Description:

Preamble.

Gaudeamus Muziekweek acts as the ISCM Dutch Section and is based in the city of Utrecht since 2011. For several years this city aimed at becoming “European Cultural Capital 2018” , a title that has been confirmed for Valletta (the capital of Malta) already had. Therefore the contacts between Utrecht and Malta were strengthened not only in the cultural field (visual arts, theatre, music) but also in the educational  and economical fields and between governments. Several exchanges of decision makers and artists of both parties and several educational projects have already been organized in the past few years.

In 2012 Ruben Zahra and Henk Heuvelmans met during the ISCM World Music Days. On this occasion discussions between Ruben and Henk laid the foundation for a longterm collaboration.

Project.

In the edition 2012 of Gaudeamus Muziekweek a new and young ensemble was presented: Ensemble Windstreken, consisting of musicians and composers with a very diverse background both in music and in geography. The result is music on the edge of composed music, improvised music and world music; with an ever changing colour of sounds by instruments from different cultures; a mix of new composition and traditional music. The musicians are looking for fresh inspiration by music from lesser known or even unknown parts of the world, rarely heard instruments, etc. Have a look at their website: http://www.windstreken.com/info_uk.html

Ruben Zahra is a composer and musician, presenting new music rooted in the music heritage of Malta and the Mediterranean. In 1999 he revived the traditional instruments of Malta which he performs; namely an ancient form of bagpipe, reedpipe and can flute. Refer to:

Therefore Gaudeamus Muziekweek brought Windstreken and Zahra in contact; they exchanged a lot of info and music through Skype and YouTube and very quickly they knew their codoperation would result into something really innovative Their collaboration would be a very happy “mariage”, not only of musicians from different parts of Europe, but also of different cultures and related traditional sounds.

Step 1: Ruben Zahra will be invited to attend the Gaudeamus Muziekweek 2013 in Utrecht; during that week he will spend a few days together with Ensemble Windstreken, in sessions and rehearsals at Muziekhuis Utrecht, the home of Gaudeamus. In these sessions new works by Ruben Zahra and young Dutch composer Leonard Evers will be studied and a further basis is made for more improvisational works and in the end a program for presentation in concert.

Step 2. Several concerts have already been fixed later during the fall of 2013 in Utrecht (in the concert series of Gaudeamus at RASA, a concert venue where all kinds of genres are presented, such as world music, new music, jazz and improvised music, literature and sound art), in Leiden, and in Malta (organized by Soundscapes).

Step 3. During their tour to Malta the musicians of Windstreken will get closer in touch with Maltese music life. All musicians are also active in other ensembles, such as the Zapp Quartet of viola player Oene van Geel, NL Mundo of uddplayer Kamal Hors, or Synergy Group Cross Culture of flutist Pieter de Mast, so they expect to find more inspiration, music, composers/musicians for Windstreken and/or their own ensembles. These still unknown contacts will give further incentive to this codoperation between ISCM members and the music life of their counttries.

Step 4. Henk Heuvelmans is invited by the Malta Association for Contemporary Music in October 2013 to attend a project by Ruben Zahra within the context of Valletta European Capital of Culture. There he will meet other decision makers in the cultural field, such as Mario Frendo of the Malta Arts festival. During the most recent assembly of the European Festivals Association (last April in Granada) Heuvelmans and Frendo met and already started discussions about codoperation between the two festivals. Thus possibly other exchanges between the two countries can take place, but moreover by such contacts links can be made to international coproductions which already take place in networks such as Ulysses Network, EFA, ECPNM and ISCM, and (in other words) new music networks are thus strengthened and enlarged.
