  • Please describe your organization’s activities over the past year, including concerts, commissions, collaborations, publications: 

    The AIC had a busy year in 2015, with membership increasing to the 100 mark for the first time in a number of years.

    National events this year included three AIC concert series – the final few events in The Irish Canon, the full Irish Composers on Irish Music Series, and the beginning of the new Directions concert series which featured composer-curated programmes.

    Across the concerts this year we have been exploring new ways to present music by taking different approaches to our events, including:
    – fewer, but bigger events
    – curation and mixed programmes
    – international and non-contemporary works included
    – new venues, e.g. James Joyce Centre, Henrietta St Georgian building
    – talks and presentations as well as concerts
    – partnership with other organisations, e.g. Listen At series, At the Drawing Room
    – use of online booking system for all events

    This approach has lead to some of our most successful events, with significantly higher audience numbers.

    This was a very successful year for international activities: we conducted a number of exchange programmes with partners in other countries, including Sepia Ensemble from Poland (through their management Sonora Music, with whom we maintain good relationships), and flautist/composer Hanan Hadzajlic from Bosnia-Herzegovina. These concerts had mixed success in terms of audience numbers but were of a very high artistic quality.

    The Irish artist residency at soundSCAPE continued this year, with a slight change to the usual system: this year the festival selected a composer/performer which fit well into their programme, Jennifer Walsh. For 2016 we will be returning to a call for proposals to select the composer/ performer.

    In 2015 we launched an open call for proposals for events and projects from members. Results of this have included establishing a new regular contemporary music slot at multi-genre concert Listen At, and a birthday celebration for composer Frank Corcoran.

    There were two ISCM-related events this year: the annual ISCM New Music Days Festival, and a special festival called ISCM-Musicarama Hong Kong. Works for both of these were selected by calls for scores, both of which received very high numbers of applicants. The selected work for New Music Days was by Patrick Brennan; Patrick and I attended the festival and assembly). Ryan Molloy was the selected composer for the ISCM Musicarama festival.

    The AIC also completed it's first edition of the AIC New Music Journal. This is an online platform for writing about and discussion of Irish contemporary music, with articles from composers, musicologists and visiting performers. The journal's focus is on multimedia presentation, and features video interviews, score-following analyses of works, and audio and score clips, as well as analytical writing.
