Notes

  • Program notes:

The Septet (2012) occurs in a pensive, nocturnal setting—a context for inner reflection. It was intended to complement the Beethoven Septet op. 20 and share its unique instrumentation: violin, viola, cello & bass, clarinet, bassoon and horn. The first three movements open with calm and fragility, then are broken by a surge of energy. The fourth movement brings more drama, with horn recitatives and solo string cadenzas that converge into a triple-cadenza. The frenzied urgency of the Finale, with its pulsing ostinati, brings back fragments and reminiscences from former movements, and awakens the listener with a call to action.
