Biography

Rafał Zapała – composer, improviser, sound artist, assistant professor at Composition Dept.
on Music Academy in Poznan, Poland.
Zapała does not recognise any boundaries between music acquired through academic
education, experience of the counterculture and collaborating with artists from other fields
of art. His music was presented at contemporary music festivals, jazz clubs, experimental
music venues and open, public spaces.
He graduated composition (MA, PhD, habilitation) and choir conducting (MA).
Participant of Darmstadt Courses, Stockhausen Concerts and Courses, Acanthes Courses
(with IRCAM, T.Murail and B.Furrer), P.Oliveros, A. Lucier (STEIM Amsterdam), Z. Karkowski
and others.
Artist-in-residence in Vertigo STARTS 2019 (with installation Sensorium), at Stanford
University–CCRMA (Jan.-Mar.2014), Culture Center "Zamek" (2014), Swiętokrzyska
Philharmonic (2014/2015), ZK/U Berlin (2016) and others.
Founder and head of an_ARCHE NewMusicFoundation and many ensembles (contemporary,
improvised, electronic music).
His concept of Live Electronic Preparation (LEP Technique) was published at Oxford
Handbook of Interactive Audio (Oxford University Press, 2014).
Sound Designer of The Polish national exhibition Post-Apocalypsis (awarded the Gold Medal
for Sound Design on the 13th Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space
Festival).
His idea of Sensorium will be developed during Vertigo STARTS residency in 2019/2010.
