Heine setting n° 1 is a composition inspired on the poem Abenddämmerung from Heinrich Heine's (1797-1856) cycle of poems Die Nordsee. The first stanza of this poem describes a man sitting at the beach at sundown, who is overlooking the sea. Heine beautifully describes how the person hears fascinating sounds as the waves approach, and in between a distant song is discernable. The song reminds him of his childhood and hometown which is described in the second stanza.
The duality in this poem is reflected in the structure of the composition : the first part starts with an evocation of the sea, the solitude, the sounds of the waves (rustling sounds in the instruments, sparse motifs,...). this evolves in a big crescendo movement (waves coming closer) from which a distant song emerges, developed in the second part : delicate chords take over, while some rustling sounds remind of the sea. Gradually a gentle melody played by the viola, comes out of nothing and reminds of something far away...
