    Francisco del Pino
    Lágrimas (2014)
    for solo cello
This piece has been conceived as an étude in two contrasting movements: the first one, Lágrima blanca, is markedly virtuoso and makes extensive use of natural harmonics (including high, very distant harmonics); the second one, Lágrima roja, is mainly based on the exploration of a 'virtual' polyphony in the spirit of the works for solo strings by J. S. Bach.
“Lágrimas” forms part of a series of solo string pieces comprising “Una furtiva lágrima” (2013) for viola, and “Jardín de lágrimas” (2014), for violin.
This work was awarded the 1st Prize in the 2014 Sorodha Composition Competition organized by the Société Royale d’Harmonie d’Anvers, Belgium. Its first performance was given by Sarah Dupriez at the Opus 4 Arts Gallery in Antwerp, Belgium on the 22nd of March 2014.
