  • Program notes:

I recall noticing that the Recital room at West Road—the concert hall in Cambridge, where I was a student—had a curious window, parallel to the road outside. The sound of traffic would slide past from one side to the other. This is perhaps an unusual feature for a concert space. But this slow, almost breathlike rhythm of the occasional passing car was my first port of call when thinking about this piece, commissioned by John Hopkins at the Music Faculty for the cellist Oliver Coates. The cello presents, in a careful, deliberate way, a series of chords, rising gradually, accompanied by an array of slowly moving sounds. Fragmentary sine tones, layered ambient noise, and later, a series of cello samples, of a foreign temperament.
