Harenda, Timothy: Purple Quartz

Basic information

Notes

  • Program notes:

The dull rocky exterior of a quartz stone is but a mask of a brilliant, colorful interior. Each performer in this ensemble uses their instrument in two ways, representing the duality of the quartz stone. The rocky exterior is portrayed by noise-based percussive gestures in the instruments, while the interior luminosity is depicted in the purity of more traditional playing.

  • Technical specs:

    Instrumentation
Bass Flute, Bass Clarinet, Cello, Vibraphone, Piano

    Amplification Needs
Bass Flute and Bass Clarinet will need amplification. Performers execute both vocal sounds and key clicks, so microphones should be placed appropriately.
Cello will need to be amplified. Some sounds are very soft.
Piano may or may not need amplification, depending on the hall.
Vibraphone will most likely not need amplification, although amplification may
    be added for light reinforcement.

    Fixed Media
A stereo fixed media track accompanies the live performers. To ensure synchronization, a click-track (provided by the composer) may be used either by a conductor, or if a conductor is not desired, one or more of the performers.

Total Inputs: 3-5 (depending on amplification choices)
Total Outputs: 5-7 (2 channels fixed media, 3-5 channels reinforced live sound)
