Notes

  • Program notes:

My String Quartet was written as part of a project including a number of young South African composers, aimed at remembering victims of the holocaust whose families now live in Johannesburg. Each of the works was based on an interpretation by the composer of a photo of one of the victims. My work interprets its accompanying photo through a partially narrative, partially atmospheric, approach. I consider the boys’ lives from a number of angles, in an attempt to liberate them temporarily from their photo prison—which has the tendency to encourage us to iconicize the children as symbols of sadness and regret—and allow them for a short time to once again be thought of as children, representing only themselves. They are reinterpreted in a variety of contrasting musical situations, which are united formally through the system of combination cycles which allows the use of an integrated harmonic spectrum from the quasi-tonal to the outright atonal.
