Notes

  • Program notes:

In Caravaggio's Flagellation of Christ (ca. 1607), the number of characters seen from close up is small. A harsh light falls on the movements of the persecutors, producing a kinetic effect that gives Christ, seen as a denuded athlete, an extra dimension of physical presence. flagellatio ii (torso) – through uninterrupted fortissimo semiquavers waves and a relentless ferocity is the body of the instrument tortured - but ultimately - transcended: performer, piano and public are thus physically, spatially and spiritually unified.
