    Broken Mirror utilises the Closed-Loop Robotic Glockenspiel, a new self-calibrating robotic instrument created by the composer. The piece sequences shards of musical material through the instrument while the audio is extracted in real-time. This audio is then sampled, transposed, manipulated and finally spatialised throughout the space via a loudspeaker array. The result is a reversal of the traditional instrument-with-live-electronics paradigm which is predominantly dominated by a cause and effect, call and response dynamic. Rather, Broken Mirror is an introspective investigation into how to “break” this reflection model, positioning the composition of the processing as an equal peer to that of the instrument.

    Technical Specifications:
    Equipment provided by composer: Robotic Glockenspiel, Laptop, Audio Interface and MIDI / Jack cables.
    Equipment required: Mixer with outputs to minimum quadraphonic speaker array (4 speakers in a surround configuration), mains power access, small table for the instrument.
    Technical Setup:
    The piece is realized by playing back MIDI and automation sequences from a digital audio workstation running on a laptop computer. The MIDI is sent to the Robotic Glockenspiel, causing it to perform acoustic instrumental material, and the resulting sound is picked up via magnetic coils in the instrument and sent back to a laptop via an audio interface. Composed automation sequences manipulate the live sound in various ways and creatively distribute the sound to the loudspeaker array. No pre-recorded audio material is included in the piece.
