    and / ante

and / ante bears witness to the millions of refugees tragically forced to cross continents in search of sanctuary in recent years. The piece arises from Dante’s poetic form whereby each middle line of a group of three rhymes with the outer lines of the next triple group and so on, to interlock: ABA, BCB etc. This suggested the idea of moving forwards while looking backwards. ‘Andante’ is Italian for ‘walking pace’, here alternating brisk, agitated motion with points of arrest and uneasy stasis; ‘ante’ means ‘behind’ in Latin, while ‘Dante’ happens to be derived from the Italian word meaning ‘enduring’.
