"When I was born/Quando eu nasci" for narrator, flute, clarinet, violin, cello and piano . 2011 approx. 11’00’’
Music by Pedro Rebelo and words by Isabel Minhós Martins . English translation by the composer

"When I was born/Quando eu nasci" is a commission for the Sond’Ar-te Electric Ensemble. The piece is part of a project that aims to tell traditional tales and original stories as viewed by Portuguese composers today for both a younger and adult audience… The work is a large scale graphic score for narrator, flute, clarinet, violin, piano, cello. The piece takes on a playful approach to gesture and narrative by using expressive graphic elements as a way of distributing musical material throughout the ensemble. The graphic notation strategy is derived from the work “Cipher Series” (2010) and can be displayed to both musicians and audiences. The piece uses the ensemble to punctuate the story, read by a narrator, with musical gestures and ambiences.
The premiere took place on the 11th June 2011 in Cascais, Portugal.
