Basic information

Notes

  • Program notes:

Crank box (2018) is a miniature concerto for orchestra and piano with a looper pedal, sampler
and orchestra. The sampler plays recordings collected from over 300 voice-messages sent by
Finnish 8th graders, depicting their everyday life. Towards the end, the piece calls for the
audience to participate with samplers built into their mobile devices.

  • Technical specs:

    I need from you:

    orchestra specials:
    - for everyone in the orchestra: mobile devices with social messanging platform where you can
send voice-messages (eg. orchestra’s whatsapp group)
    - 2 melodicas (min 2 8ves) (for 2nd clarinet and 2nd bassoon, they should sit next to each other
    for easy coordination).

    sampler:
    - Keyboard with soundcard or USB-connection to laptop
    - laptop to drive sampler from.*

    looper:
    - Boss RC-300 looper*
    - XLR cable in
    - 2 jack cables STEREO OUT
    - microphone (cap for frquencies under 230Hz)

    video:
    - projector
    - screen
    - laptop for driving the video (.mov file, the video is without sound, but has a clicktrack)
    - clicktrack from video to conductor (headphones)

    audience participation**:
The audience plays along the video with samplers built into their mobile devices in three
    possible ways:
    - on an application (sampler, keypad, piano)
    - on a custom built application*
    - through creating voice-message-based sampler onto a messaging platform (eg. whatsapp).
This would happen in workshop during or before the concert.
A short workshop with the audience will precede the performance of the piece, to help them get
    acquainted with how to participate.

*I can bring these if needed.
**I’m happy to host/assist with organising the audience workshop and the use of the mobile
device samplers, and the developing of a custom built sampler, and the logistics of getting it
    downloaded for all audience members.
