From contemporaneous reviews

“The festivals of the International Society for Contemporary Music have always been like the Paris dress-shows. They have provided, that is to say, for the exhibition of new ideas and techniques rather than for the performance of works of guaranteed worth. Just as very few women expect ever to see, still less to wear, the outré clothes shown in the Paris collections, so very few music-lovers will ever hear, still less come to live with, the typical I S C M work. …. The I S C M programmes must by definition be drawn from all music that can claim to be in any way new and is not demonstrably incompetent technically. What deserves to survive will survive, but it must first be heard.”

–Martin Cooper, “Models for a New Spring,”
The Daily Telegraph [London], September 17, 1966, p. 11.

“Some critics have complained that the annual ISCM concerts are exercises in futility inasmuch as most of the works performed never enter the mainstream of music heard by a large public. The fact remains that new techniques, new sound and new arrangements of sound — the forces that are shaping music now and to come — find their first expression at these concerts.”

The Minneapolis Star, September 19, 1966, p. 9.
