Description

From a contemporaneous review…

“It is a happy sign of the political barometer that Prague was able to offer official hospitality to an independent international organisation for the propagation of avant-garde music.

“In the Festival proper the most rewarding event was the first chamber concert… By and large, the orchestral works I heard–Italian, Jugoslav, Polish, Spanish, Czechoslovak–impressed me less. Contemporary orchestral music suffers from a drab near-sameness like that which afflicts so much modern architecture. The programme-notes naturally had much to say about how the music was constructed and the reader had to remind himself that this is no longer something that concerns the composer only, as Schoenberg insisted: this is what contemporary music is about.”
