Peco Chui: Fragrance
Peco Chui (b. 1978 in Hong Kong) graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, majoring in piano performance. He studied piano with celebrated performer Ms. Nancy Loo. A professional singer-songwriter, he has also written songs for well-known artists, such as Eason Chan, Pak Ho Chow, Alfred Hui, Kay Tse, Bibi Zhou, Cloud Wan, Sammi Cheng, Hacken Lee, F4, etc, many of which are highly popular. In addition, Chui started painting in 2010 and his first painting exhibition was successfully held in 2015. At the same time, he was invited to compose songs for musicals, and to act and serve as musical director in musical performances. In 2016, he received an award of the best music and lyrics of the musical work Love To Forget presented by “Class 7A Drama Group” in the 25th Hong Kong Drama Group Drama Awards Presentation Ceremony. In 2018, he participated in another musical work Martin Luther as a composer, musical director and actor and songs from this musical were subsequently released on CD. In the same year, Love To Forget was revived successfully. In 2019, Chui was performed in a tour of China in the following musicals: The Company (Cantonese version) by Stephen Sondheim, Matteo Ricci, and Smokey Joe’s Cafe. He has recently worked on the film score of a local film Embrace which talks about dementia in 2020. He composed all songs of this film. He is also the pianist for the NEXUS ensemble for whom he composed Fragrance.
According to the composer, in Fragrance, “each instrument of the NEXUS ensemble has its own unique sound and beauty, like the distinctive smell of every single perfume. The creative process of Fragrance is to blend these unique instruments so that the audience can hear, and even ‘smell,’ the aroma of NEXUS.”
